Balancing the mind, body, and spirit.

A guide to help you balance and maintain your mind, body, and spirit.

What exactly are the mind, body, and spirit?

The mind, body, and spirit are all different but equally important parts of a person.

You have the physical body (our cells, fluids, and organs), the mind (thoughts, ideas, and consciousness), and the spirit (which cannot be seen in the traditional sense).

You're probably wondering why it's important to know about all three.

When we look at the mind, body, & spirit, it's important to understand their connection to each other because of their intricate relationship with one another.

The health of your body has an effect on your mind & spirit and vice versa.  Therefore, if you think about it, you can't separate these things if you want to live a life that is balanced and healthy.

Just think of all the stressors we’re exposed to on a daily basis — traffic, deadlines, coworkers, family, significant others, and the list goes on!

Life, in general, can affect your overall health.  So if you want to keep your sanity and health intact, you have to take a holistic approach to your wellness by keeping these areas of life balanced.

Balancing your mind, body, and soul might seem like more work to add to your already full to-do list.  Let me tell you from experience that the effort is worth it.

Just imagine a life that is more fulfilling and joyful than the typical 9-5 grind.

In this post, you'll learn how to keep your mind, body, and spirit happy, balanced, and fulfilled every day.

What are the mind, body, and spirit?

The mind, body, and spirit are the three aspects of human life.  They are the inner being, the outer self, and the connection in between.

The Mind is the seat of consciousness, thoughts, and mental images. It is your ability to reason and understand concepts.

Your subconscious mind is where your instinctive thoughts are stored.  These can be positive or negative such as love or hate, trust or distrust.

The Body is the physical structure that houses you. It is made up of bones, muscles, blood vessels, organs, and skin.  It is also where you physically feel your emotions and feelings such as joy, happiness, fear, anger, and pain.

Spirit is composed of higher level energies such as our intuition, inspiration, faith, and vision.  These are all aspects that make us who we are on a higher level than either mind or body alone.

Therefore, our system is not just made of what we see, but includes a biofield of massless, low energy levels that can be manipulated during energy-based healing practices.

According to science, this biofield is responsible for generating, maintaining, and regulating energy in living beings, which is also helpful in understanding how the mind, body, and spirit work together to maintain balance & harmony.

How the mind, body, and spirit work together.

The mind, body, & spirit is a phrase that is used to describe the connection between all three aspects of our being—the mental, physical, and spiritual.

The mind, body, & spirit are interconnected in a way that supports our overall well-being. When we are able to balance each of these parts of ourselves, we are able to achieve optimal health.

While some believe that the mind, body, & spirit is just a new-age term, this holistic perspective has been around for centuries. The importance of having a healthy mind, body & spirit exists within different cultures.

Take, for instance, Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (a.k.a. TCM).  Ayurveda has been around for over 5,000 years and originated in India.

TCM has also been around for thousands of years.  Both practices take a holistic approach to health and focus on the person as a whole rather than focusing on disease the way Western medicine does.

Western medicine has done wonders for humankind, but studies have shown the benefits of adding a holistic approach to health and well-being, as in Ayurveda and TCM.

By focusing on all three aspects of ourselves and becoming proactive in maintaining balance between the mind, body, & spirit, we can lead more fulfilling, happier, & healthier lives.

I will go over the tips that have helped me maintain balance and good health in my daily life.

11 tips to balance the mind, body, and spirit.

1.  Exercise regularly.

Getting enough exercise throughout your day can increase endorphins, which can help relieve stress and improve your mood.

Regular exercise has been shown to improve the quality of life, increase lifespan, improve health outcomes, and stave off chronic diseases.

2.  Get enough sleep.

Sleep is very important for a healthy mind, body, and spirit. If you don't get enough sleep, your thinking ability decreases and you become more prone to crankiness and forgetfulness.

Meeting your sleep quota is important for your health and brain function and if you've ever suffered a sleepless night, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

3.  Drink water.

An adult human body is made up of about 75% water.  That is a huge number, which is why it's important to get enough of it into your system for your body to function properly and stay balanced.

There are no strict water drinking guidelines, only recommendations, because the amount of water you need depends on your age, weight, gender, and how active you are.

Just remember that you can get water through your drinks & food and drink before you get thirsty.  Also, you can sometimes tell you're drinking enough if your urine is clear or light yellow.

4.  Eat the rainbow.

Eat a wide variety of food, especially brightly colored vegetables, which contain nutrients that can keep you well-nourished.

To stay healthy and balanced, you want to make sure you are eating whole grains, limiting junk & sugar, eating lean meats, and consuming a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.

5.  Nurture your creativity.

You don't have to be an artist or musician to be creative.  Your creativity is unique to you.  It's the thing you would do even if you weren't getting paid for it.

Expressing your creativity makes you feel uplifted and joyful, which can make you feel fulfilled and balanced.  You can try different hobbies and interests until you find the thing that makes you feel happy and forget the time.

6.  Express gratitude.

Gratitude is an appreciation of the things that are already in your life.  Gratitude has been shown to improve physical and mental health.

You can start expressing more gratitude by writing in a gratitude journal, saying a gratitude prayer, counting your blessings, or saying thanks to someone else.

The more you practice gratitude, the more you'll increase your awareness of what's most important to you in life and your connection to other people.

7.  Find your passions and purpose in life.

You can find your passions and purpose in life by getting to know yourself better and identifying your core values and beliefs.

Then you can align them with your goals and plans so you can take action and have a greater sense of balance and fulfillment in your life.

Your passions and purpose in life give you a reason for doing all the things you do in life.  This can help you stay focused in what most important to you so you can maintain balance in your mind, body, and spirit.

8.  Meditation

Meditation can help balance your mind and body, though it takes practice and effort.  It's not about clearing your mind of thoughts, but rather allowing the thoughts to flow through without attaching to them or associating them with emotions.

You can start meditating in a quiet space while sitting upright for just a few minutes a day until you can work your way up to a number that feels comfortable to you.

9.  Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a form of meditation that helps keep your focus on the present moment.  Just like meditation, you have to practice mindfulness regularly if you want to reap the benefits, which are decreased stress, a boost in memory, improved focus, and a host of other health benefits.

The great thing about mindfulness is that you don't have to sit in the lotus position for hours to feel the benefits.  You can practice mindfulness while you're cleaning, driving, or walking.

10.  Yoga

Yoga is an ancient practice and perhaps one of the best ways to balance the mind, body, and spirit.  It is said to have originated in the Himalayas, is practiced widely throughout India, spread across Asia & Africa, and is gaining in popularity around the world every day.

Journaling can help to balance the mind, body, and spirit.  According to WebMD, here are the ways journaling can help:

  • Decreased mental distress.
  • Reduced anxiety.
  • Improved well-being.
  • Breaks obsessive thinking and brooding.
  • Increases awareness of yourself and others.
  • Regulates emotions by writing down feelings.
  • Encourages reaching out for social support.
  • Speeds up healing.
  • Improves health outcomes.

You can start journaling in a notebook and simply write out your thoughts and feelings.  Or you can journal on your phone or computer through apps.

Some people even journal on social media, though I wouldn't recommend it unless you're the type who likes to share openly.
