Why moms need a planner.
Having a planner seems counterintuitive for moms because planners take time out of their already busy day. As a mom, you have a multitude of tasks that need to get done on any given day.
Things like cleaning, planning what to eat for the week, budgeting for your household expenses, taking the kids to school, scheduling appointments, and remembering every family event & activity.
It's no wonder sometimes that you forget to turn in a permission slip, or that you volunteered to help set up at a school event, or your child's orthodontist appointment you scheduled what seemed like ages ago.
A planner actually helps you stay organized and on top of things. It takes less time than you would think if you get one that is right for your needs and lifestyle.
According to Barbara Markway, Ph.D., of Psychology Today, planners not only help you manage your time and schedule appointments, but they also:
- Improve your productivity in your work life and at home. Not only do you have to manage your work schedule, but you also need to make good use of your time at home. A planner makes you aware of where you might be wasting your time as well as where you need to focus your attention and energy.
- Provide stress relief. A planner can help reduce overwhelm by helping you transition from one task to the next seamlessly instead of worrying about forgetting something, running late, or needing to cancel at the last minute.
- Health benefits. Planners can work hard for you by helping you keep track of your health, good habits you want to form, self-care activities, doctor & dental visits, and even journaling.
- Make time for meaningful activities. One of the greatest benefits of having a planner is the extra time it gives you because you get your most important tasks out of the way first. Then it creates space in your schedule for things like pursuing your passions, learning something new, or even impromptu get-togethers with friends, family, and loved ones.
Writing in a physical planner helps you to remember appointments and tasks in a way that is meaningful to you. Whether you are a working mom, a stay-at-home mom, or a mom somewhere in between, a planner can be your lifesaver by keeping your personal and work life organized and balanced.

Choosing your planner.
There are so many planners in existence out there and they come in all kinds of colors, sizes, shapes, textures, and structures. Here are a few important things to consider to ease your decision-making process, before you go out and purchase your planner.
Physical or digital planner?
- Do you enjoy the feeling of textures or the weight of something in your hand?
- Are you the type that likes to hold books, pens, and pencils?
If your answer to these first 2 questions was yes, then you'll want to get a physical planner.
- Do you like technology and gadgets?
- Are you the kind that enjoys the mobility and convenience of electronic devices?
If you answered yes to these 2 questions, then you'll want to purchase a digital planner or app.
Dated or undated planner?
If you want to start planning at the beginning of the year, you can purchase a dated planner the year before in December (or even earlier if they're already in the stores or online).
Dated planners are the most common type of planners and they start at the beginning of the year (January 1).
They are also convenient because all the dates, months, and even hours are pre-printed for you. Even if you purchase one past January, you can still use a dated planner.
If you end up buying a planner well after the start of the new year, you can opt for an undated planner. It doesn't have the added convenience of a planner with pre-printed dates, but it can eliminate outdated, unused space.
Undated planners are also customizable because you can start at any time and all you have to do is fill in the months and dates.
If you're one of those creative moms with some time on her hands, then the bullet journal is for you. Bullet journals are the blank canvas of planners. They are a free-form type of planner that allows for more customization and creativity.
As I said, they do take more time than the other planners I just mentioned. So if you're willing to put in more effort, you can watch this video on bullet journaling to help you understand the process and framework.
Or, if you'd rather read about bullet journaling, you can go here.
One important feature to think about before purchasing your planner is the way that it's formatted. Planners are usually structured according to days, weeks, or months.
Daily planners are divided by each day of the week and then further divided by the hours. Each page or two is devoted to an entire day, which is why they're bigger than most planners. Because of their size, sometimes they're divided into 6-month planners instead of one 12-month planner.
The great thing about a daily planner is you can schedule all of your meetings, events, doctor visits, me time, date night, a spa day, playdates, etc, by the hour.
Weekly planners usually devote two pages for each week. There are no segments for each hour like a daily planner, but you can write in your appointments, meetings, etc under each day.
They're also typically smaller than daily planners, so you can carry them in your tote bag or purse, depending on the size.
The great thing about a weekly planner is you can see what's going on for the entire week at a glance.
A monthly planner allows you to look at the bigger picture rather than the minutiae, like a daily or weekly planner. Your monthly plans parallel your big goals in life.
It is the starting point of your daily and weekly planning because this is where you begin to break down your big goal into smaller, more manageable goals.
This is important because it acts as the map and compass of your life. Without your monthly goals, you can lose your focus and direction. You also risk overbooking & overlapping your appointments, events, etc if you can't see your monthly plans at a glance.
Planner physical features and price.
You want to think about the type of planner that you want to invest in because how you're going to physically use your planner makes world of difference.
I personally love spiral-bound planners because they keep everything tight and secure. I can lay my planner flat on my table so I can write on it with ease.
You can fold the binder completely in half and have just one page to look at without worrying about making creases on your sheets.
My only gripe about this type of planner is what I also love about it, which is the spiral. It can obstruct my hand as I write and sometimes I forget that it's even there and bump into it.
If you don't like spiral-bound planners, then the hardcover planner could be a great choice. These planners look like a book, which is what makes them attractive. You can buy the flat lay kind so that the pages stay flat.
You can't fold hardcover planners completely in half the way you can with a spiral-bound planner.
A fillable planner is a binder-type planner that you can open and close and fill with the pages that you need. The great thing about this type of planner is the fact that you can add or remove the pages.
You don't have to worry about running out of space or that you made a mistake writing something because you can always add a fresh, new page.
The size of your planner is important because it determines how much space it's going to take up, whether or not you want to carry it around, and how much information you actually want to write.
This also determines how much your planner is going to cost. Usually, the bigger it is, the more you'll have to shell out for it.
You're probably wondering if it's worth it to buy a planner.
Do you want something affordable that will get the job done but won't bite into your budget? Or do you want a sturdy, high-quality planner with all the bells and whistles?
Is the fancy, $70 planner from Erin Condren better than the $10 one you saw at Target?
For many of us, the price point of anything is the ultimate deciding factor when making a purchase. When it comes to planners, you don't have to sacrifice your hard-earned money to get a good-quality planner.
If it's making your life flow easier and you're using it regularly, then it won't matter too much what the price of your planner is.
So I recommend buying the best planner you can afford that suits your needs and lifestyle.
